Sergey Brin Reflects on His Journey: “I Made a Lot of Mistakes with Google Glass
Google co-founder Sergey Brin reflected on his experience with Google Glass, admitting he made several missteps related to the project during an onstage interview at Google I/O 2025. Brin, who surprised the audience by joining the discussion moderated by Big Technology Podcast host Alex Kantrowitz, expressed that he was unaware of consumer electronics supply chains and the challenges of creating affordable smart glasses.
Despite past difficulties, Brin remains optimistic about smart glasses, stating he appreciates Google’s renewed commitment to the technology, especially with strong partners aiding in its development. At the event, Google showcased its latest endeavor — Android XR smart glasses — demonstrating their capabilities, including live translations and navigational assistance, powered by DeepMind’s Project Astra.
In order to effectively develop these AI-integrated smart glasses, Google is collaborating with notable partners like Samsung and Xreal. Additionally, they are investing up to $150 million in Warby Parker, acquiring an equity stake in the eyewear company to leverage their expertise in addressing manufacturing challenges.
Brin highlighted how advancements in generative AI have made the potential of smart glasses much more realistic compared to the earlier Google Glass venture. He also acknowledged his active role within Google’s Gemini project, indicating he spends considerable time in the Mountain View office contributing to multimodal AI developments.
Brin further encouraged computer scientists to stay engaged in the evolving field of AI, asserting that there is no time for retirement when technology is advancing rapidly.
