Arm Launches Flexible Edge AI Platform for Startups to Accelerate Innovation
Arm has launched its cutting-edge edge AI platform, Armv9, and made it accessible to startups through its Flexible Access programme. This initiative allows chip designers to test and iterate ideas without requiring immediate financial commitments, providing low-cost or even free access for eligible startups to a range of Arm’s technology and resources.
The Flexible Access model has already proven successful, acting as a catalyst for innovation with around 400 chips developed over the past five years, involving notable companies like Raspberry Pi, Hailo, and SiMa.ai.
The Armv9 platform pairs the efficient Arm Cortex-A320 processor with the Arm Ethos-U85 Neural Processing Unit (NPU), capable of running AI models with over a billion parameters directly on edge devices without needing to connect to the cloud. This technology aims to drive advancements in applications such as smart cameras that analyze their surroundings and smart home devices that adapt to user behavior.
According to Paul Williamson from Arm’s IoT division, the next significant advancements in AI will occur at the edge, where data is generated. This approach also enhances privacy and security by enabling on-device processing, which means sensitive data doesn’t have to leave the device for analysis. The implementation includes robust security features to protect on-device data.
Research forecasts that by 2028, AI will dominate the technological landscape in IoT projects, positioning Arm’s technology at the forefront of this shift. The Arm Cortex-A320 will be available via the programme starting in November 2025, with the Ethos-U85 NPU following in early 2026.
