Snapchat Unveils First Free Open Prompt AI Lens for Users in the US!
Snapchat is rolling out its "Imagine Lens," the first open prompt image-generation AI Lens, to all users at no cost. Previously, this feature was only available to paid subscribers. With the Imagine Lens, users can generate and edit images using custom prompts. For example, users can modify their selfies by prompting the app to "Turn me into an alien" or ask for an image of a "grumpy cat." This tool can also be utilized for trying on Halloween costumes or reimagining friends with different looks.
Once created, images can be shared with friends, added to Snapchat Stories, or posted outside of the app. This move expands Snapchat’s offerings to compete with AI video-generating applications like Meta’s Meta AI and OpenAI’s Sora, which are attracting young audiences with their innovative features. For instance, Sora allows users to generate videos of themselves after submitting a single video and audio recording.
The decision to make the AI Lens accessible to free users reflects Snapchat’s effort to stay competitive in the evolving landscape of social media. Originally, access was limited to Lens+ and Snapchat Platinum Subscribers. Now, a limited number of image generations will be available to all free users in the U.S., with plans to expand to countries like Canada, Great Britain, and Australia.
To use the Lens, it can be found at the beginning of the in-app Lens Carousel, or users can search for it by name. When creating images, users can edit prompts or select from preloaded suggestions for inspiration. Snapchat reports that its Lenses are used over 8 billion times daily.
