The Rise and Fall of OpenAI’s Sora: The Creepiest App on Your Phone is Shutting Down

OpenAI has announced that it is shutting down Sora, an app launched just six months ago that aimed to compete with TikTok by offering an AI-based social platform. No specific reason for the closure was provided, nor did OpenAI outline a timeline for the app’s discontinuation.

Initially, Sora garnered significant excitement as an invite-only network, comparable to Meta’s Horizon Worlds, but ultimately lacked staying power. Despite the impressive capabilities of its underlying video- and audio-generation model, user interest in an AI-focused social feed waned.

OpenAI’s goodbye message thanked Sora’s creators and users for their contributions but acknowledged the disappointment surrounding its closure.

Sora, designed to mimic TikTok’s vertical video layout, featured a notable function called “cameos,” allowing users to create deepfake videos of themselves. However, following legal challenges, this feature was renamed to "characters."

Upon its launch, Sora attracted users with bizarre deepfakes, including videos of OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, in unusual scenarios. Although meant to prevent unauthorized deepfakes of public figures, the platform became a ground for generating unrealistic portrayals of real people, prompting backlash from family members of notable figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and Robin Williams.

Despite initial success—peaking at over 3.3 million downloads—it quickly declined, and by February, downloads fell to around 1.1 million. Sora reportedly made approximately $2.1 million from in-app purchases, but the financial sustainability of the app was questionable given OpenAI’s broader financial struggles.

The app’s initial hype was evident, and it briefly captured public attention, with many expressing concerns about the implications of readily available deepfake technology. Users shifted from creating deepfakes of the app’s CEO to generating content involving copyrighted characters. Ironically, Disney, which could have pursued legal action, chose to invest $1 billion and negotiate a licensing deal that ultimately fell through with Sora’s shutdown.

Although Sora is being discontinued, the technology behind it—Sora 2—remains available through OpenAI’s ChatGPT subscription service, indicating that while this particular app is gone, the potential for similar technologies to emerge continues to loom large.
