Generative AI in Retail: Balancing Innovation with Security Risks

The retail sector has rapidly adopted generative AI technologies, with a striking increase from 73% to 95% of organizations utilizing these applications in just one year, according to cybersecurity firm Netskope. However, this boom in AI usage comes at a significant cost—heightened security risks.

The report mentions that while retailers embrace generative AI, they simultaneously expose themselves to a greater variety of potential cyberattacks and data leaks. To navigate this new landscape, retailers have shifted from chaotic, individual adoption of AI tools to a more structured approach led by corporate policies. Notably, the use of personal AI accounts has dropped from 74% to 36%, while the use of company-approved generative AI tools has increased significantly, from 21% to 52%.

ChatGPT remains the most popular tool, adopted by 81% of organizations, but competitors like Google’s Gemini and Microsoft’s Copilot are gaining ground, with adoption rates of 60% and 56%, respectively. However, this rise in generative AI usage has sparked a troubling trend of sensitive data being fed into these systems. A notable 47% of all data policy violations in generative AI apps are linked to companies’ own source code, while 39% involve confidential customer information.

In response to these security concerns, many retailers have begun banning high-risk applications, chief among them ZeroGPT, which has been restricted by 47% of companies due to fears of data mishandling.

With the landscape shifting, companies are now gravitating toward enterprise-grade generative AI solutions from major cloud suppliers like OpenAI via Azure and Amazon Bedrock. Each of these platforms is used by 16% of retail firms, providing better security and control over sensitive data. However, even these solutions come with risks, including potential misuse via API connections to backend systems, which could expose critical company data.

Alongside these challenges, the report highlights that 63% of organizations are now linking directly to OpenAI’s API, which deepens the integration of AI into daily operations. Meanwhile, the threat of malware remains serious, with platforms like Microsoft OneDrive frequently exploited.

Furthermore, many employees continue to use unapproved personal applications for work, contributing to data breaches. The report underscores that when employees upload files to these platforms, the result is a staggering 76% of data policy violations involving regulated data.

Security experts warn that the time for casual experimentation with generative AI is over. To mitigate risks, companies need to ensure robust policies, monitor all web traffic, and block dangerous applications to secure sensitive information effectively.
