Teens Turn to ChatGPT for Schoolwork: Navigating Benefits and Challenges

Younger members of Generation Z are increasingly turning to OpenAI’s chatbot, ChatGPT, for school-related tasks. A recent survey conducted by the Pew Research Center reveals that 26% of U.S.-based teens aged 13 to 17 reported using ChatGPT for homework or other educational assignments, a significant increase from previous years.
The same survey indicated that while more than half of the respondents, 54%, believe it is acceptable to use ChatGPT for researching new subjects, 29% feel that solving math problems with the tool is acceptable, and only 18% approve of using it for writing essays. However, these results raise concerns about the awareness of the chatbot’s limitations among users.
ChatGPT has notable weaknesses, particularly in math and reliability as a factual source. A recent study noted that while GPT-4o (the model behind ChatGPT) performed marginally better than random guessing on a doctorate-level history test, it struggled with topics of significant relevance to the demographics of its teen users. Specifically, Black and Hispanic teens were more likely than their white counterparts to report using ChatGPT for educational purposes.
Research surrounding ChatGPT’s effectiveness in educational settings is mixed. A study from the University of Pennsylvania revealed that Turkish high school students using ChatGPT performed worse on math tests compared to their peers who did not have access to the AI. Conversely, other research found that while German students using ChatGPT found research materials more easily, they lacked the ability to synthesize information as effectively as those who did not utilize the tool.
In a related poll by Pew, a quarter of public K-12 teachers expressed that AI tools like ChatGPT can hinder educational outcomes. Meanwhile, a separate study indicated that only 18% of K-12 educators incorporate AI into their teaching practices.
