Datumo Secures $15.5M in Funding to Compete with Scale AI, Backed by Salesforce
Seoul-based Datumo has successfully raised $15.5 million to enhance its capabilities in AI safety and evaluation, reaching a total of approximately $28 million in funding. Investors in this round include Salesforce Ventures, KB Investment, ACVC Partners, and SBI Investment.
Founded in 2018 by David Kim and five KAIST alumni, Datumo started as an AI data labeling operation but has evolved to provide businesses with essential tools and data for testing and monitoring AI models. Kim, a former AI researcher, conceived the idea for a reward-based app that allows individuals to label data for income, sparking initial interest and pre-sales even before the app was fully functional.
Initially focused on data labeling, Datumo has since expanded its services to include AI model evaluation. With over 300 clients—including major Korean corporations like Samsung and Hyundai—the startup generated about $6 million in revenue in 2024. The need for more complex services led the company to release Korea’s first benchmark dataset aimed at AI trust and safety.
Datumo now stands out from competitors like Scale AI by offering a full-stack evaluation platform called Datumo Eval, designed for users without programming skills, enabling them to assess AI outputs for bias and safety concerns.
The recent influx of capital will bolster the company’s R&D, particularly in creating automated evaluation tools for enterprises, while also expanding its market presence in South Korea, Japan, and the United States. The startup has already established a base in Silicon Valley, employing around 150 people in Seoul.
