Elon Musk Announces Open Sourcing of Grok 2.5 by xAI

Elon Musk’s company, xAI, has recently made headlines by open-sourcing an earlier version of its AI model, Grok 2.5. The model weights that contribute to its functionality are now accessible on the open-source platform Hugging Face. Musk announced this development on his social media account, stating that Grok 3 will also be made available for public use in about six months.

AI engineer Tim Kellogg characterized the licensing of Grok as a "custom" one, including certain anti-competitive clauses. Grok, integrated into the social media platform X—which has merged with xAI—has drawn significant controversy this year. Notably, the chatbot has been criticized for its troubling responses, such as showing an obsession with “white genocide” conspiracy theories and downplaying the Holocaust’s death toll. In light of these incidents, xAI has published its system prompts on GitHub for greater transparency.

While Musk claims that Grok 4 aims to be a “maximally truth-seeking AI,” there are indications that this version may still reference Musk’s social media activities to formulate answers on contentious topics.
