The Accelerating Cycle of Talent in AI Labs: A Look at the Growing “Revolving Door” Phenomenon

AI labs are currently facing significant turnover, with several high-profile departures making headlines. Recently, three executives from Mira Murati’s Thinking Machines lab left under contentious circumstances and were quickly hired by OpenAI. Furthermore, reports indicate that two additional employees from Thinking Machines are expected to make the same transition soon.

As this movement continues, Anthropic has been actively recruiting talent from OpenAI. Notably, Andrea Vallone, a lead in OpenAI’s safety research, has joined Anthropic. Vallone’s expertise lies in addressing the responses of AI models to mental health challenges—an area of concern for OpenAI given their previous issues with AI behavior. This strategic hiring comes after Jan Leike, another alignment researcher who departed OpenAI in 2024 due to safety concerns, joined Anthropic as well.

In a strategic move to reinforce its own team, OpenAI has also managed to bring in Max Stoiber, the former director of engineering at Shopify, to contribute to the development of their long-speculated operating system.
