Intel Enters the GPU Market: A New Challenger to Nvidia’s Dominance
Intel is set to venture into the graphics processing unit (GPU) market, traditionally dominated by Nvidia, as it seeks to reposition itself in the tech landscape. During the Cisco AI Summit, Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan announced the company’s commitment to producing GPUs, which are specialized processors used for gaming and artificial intelligence tasks, contrasting with Intel’s traditional focus on central processing units (CPUs).
The project will be overseen by Kevork Kechichian, who was appointed as the executive vice president and general manager of Intel’s data center group. Kechichian joined the company in September as part of a broader effort to bolster Intel’s capabilities, and he will be complemented by the recently hired Eric Demers, formerly a senior vice president of engineering at Qualcomm.
This announcement indicates that Intel is at an early stage of strategically developing its GPU production to meet customer demands. Historically, while Nvidia is recognized for popularizing the GPU market, Intel’s foray could reflect its ambitions to gain a foothold in a lucrative sector that is increasingly vital for AI and high-performance computing.
Intel’s expansion into GPU production comes as a surprise given Tan’s previous indication of consolidating Intel’s focus on its core business areas since taking the CEO position last March. Although GPUs are still part of the semiconductor family, this move marks a significant transition for the company.
