OpenAI and Google Staff Rally Behind Anthropic in Department of Defense Lawsuit

More than 30 employees from OpenAI and Google DeepMind have publicly backed Anthropic in its legal battle against the U.S. Defense Department. The support comes after the Pentagon classified Anthropic as a “supply-chain risk.” This designation is typically reserved for foreign adversaries and arose after the AI firm declined to let the DOD utilize its technology for mass surveillance or autonomous weaponry.
The employees’ statement criticized the government’s actions, stating that the classification was an arbitrary misuse of power with significant implications for the AI industry. A notable signatory of the statement is Google DeepMind’s chief scientist, Jeff Dean.
The Pentagon’s decision followed Anthropic’s refusal to permit its technology for purposes the company deemed inappropriate. The DOD had argued that it should be free to apply AI for any lawful purpose, regardless of the constraints set by private contractors.
The statement of support rolling in from OpenAI and Google employees was filed shortly after Anthropic launched two lawsuits against the DOD and other government bodies. It emphasized that if the DOD was dissatisfied with Anthropic’s contract, it could have simply terminated it and sought services from another AI company. Indeed, reports noted that the DOD quickly procured a deal with OpenAI after making the classification against Anthropic, a move met with protests from some employees at OpenAI.
The amicus brief stressed that allowing the government to target a leading AI firm would negatively affect the U.S.’s competitiveness in artificial intelligence. It warned that such actions could stifle critical discussions regarding the benefits and risks associated with modern AI systems.
Additionally, the filing reiterated that Anthropic’s cautions regarding the use of their technology were valid, advocating for the need for strong regulations to govern AI usage to prevent potential catastrophic misuse.
Many of the employees involved had previously signed open letters urging the DOD to revoke the "supply-chain risk" classification and asking their company leaders to back Anthropic’s stance against unilateral use of their AI systems.
