Meta Unveils Innovative Camera-Free AI Glasses: A New Era of Wearable Tech
Meta recently unveiled its latest innovation, the Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses, during the Connect 2026 conference. These camera-free AI glasses are aimed at addressing growing privacy concerns associated with wearable technology that includes video recording capabilities, which had led to negative perceptions, often labeled as “pervert glasses.”
The new audio-only glasses focus on delivering an experience that allows users to listen to music, podcasts, make calls, translate speech, and interact with Meta’s AI assistant, Muse. Designed in collaboration with EssilorLuxottica, the glasses will retail starting at $349.
Despite Meta already having a lineup of AI glasses, the introduction of this audio-only model is seen as a strategic move to mitigate reputational damages caused by prior privacy issues. For instance, complaints arose when users allegedly took videos without the consent of those being recorded. Meta previously attempted to quell such accusations by updating its glasses with a feature that disabled the camera if the recording indicator was tampered with; however, concerns persisted.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg emphasized during the launch that the high-quality audio experience offered by the new glasses is something that users will come to expect regularly. The glasses are designed to be more streamlined than the camera-equipped versions, weighing only 43 grams and boasting up to 12 hours of battery life on a single charge. With the charging case, this prolongs to up to 48 hours.
Available in various styles and colors—23 combinations in total—the glasses come in two designs: a retro "Clubmaster" style and a "Burbank" style with a classic rectangular frame. For those who need corrective lenses, optical prescriptions will also be available.
Preorders for the Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses will begin on October 13. Along with these, Meta announced its next generation of AI glasses featuring cameras, the Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 3), which will include styles like the Aviator and Zena, with advanced specifications such as a 12 MP camera capable of 3K Ultra HD video.
As part of Meta’s evolving product lineup, all AI glasses will be integrated with the Muse assistant, and the company has hinted at other enhancements, including features that improve user experience and maintain privacy, allowing for customizable settings while ensuring data protection.
