Crusoe Halts $1.25B Initiative to Implement Boom Turbines in AI Data Centers
Crusoe, a Denver-based AI data center startup known for its innovative use of excess energy, has decided to halt its ambitious $1.25 billion plan to utilize Boom Supersonic’s stationary power plants. This decision marks a significant shift for Crusoe, which has rapidly expanded from its origins as a bitcoin miner into one of the major builders of AI data centers, supplying computational power to firms like OpenAI.
Boom Supersonic, famous for developing the supersonic passenger jet Overture, pivoted last year to offer its engine as a stationary natural gas-fired power plant. Crusoe was set to be the initial customer for this new venture, committing to purchase 29 units of the Boom Superpower turbine. However, Boom Supersonic’s CEO, Blake Scholl, recently announced that the partnership was no longer viable, confirming that Crusoe’s immediate energy solutions would not include these turbines.
Crusoe’s spokesperson, Andrew Schmitt, emphasized their commitment to flexible energy solutions for their AI factories, citing that as their operations grow, they will adapt their energy strategies to fit the needs of each site. They are currently powering their primary data centers in Abilene using the grid and have a back-up gas-turbine power plant.
Scholl noted that losing Crusoe as a partner is disappointing, especially after Boom raised $300 million to launch the stationary turbine business. He expressed optimism about finding new customers for the Superpower turbines.
The future collaboration between Crusoe and Boom Supersonic now seems uncertain, as both companies pivot their strategies in response to the evolving landscape of energy needs in AI data centers.
