NVIDIA has announced its next-generation Blackwell GPU architecture, designed to usher in a new era of accelerated computing and enable organisations to build and run real-time generative AI on trillion-parameter large language models.
The Blackwell platform promises up to 25 times lower cost and energy consumption compared to its predecessor: the Hopper architecture. Named after pioneering mathematician and statistician David Harold Blackwell, the new GPU architecture introduces six transformative technologies.
“Generative AI is the defining technology of our time. Blackwell is the engine to power this new industrial revolution,” said Jensen Huang, Founder and CEO of NVIDIA. “Working with the most dynamic companies in the world, we will realise the promise of AI for every industry.”
The groundbreaking features of Blackwell encompass the planet’s strongest chip with 208 billion transistors, an upgraded Transformer Engine which delivers twice the computational power and model sizes, a fifth-generation NVLink interconnect that enables speedy multi-GPU exchanges, and sophisticated engines dedicated to reliability, security, and data decompression.
The cornerstone of Blackwell is the NVIDIA GB200 Grace Blackwell Superchip, a fusion of two B200 Tensor Core GPUs integrated with a Grace CPU through an extremely fast 900GB/s NVLink interconnect. Several GB200 Superchips can be networked to form setups similar to the liquid-cooled GB200 NVL72 system, housing up to 72 Blackwell GPUs and 36 Grace CPUs, capable of delivering 1.4 exaflops of AI power.
Prominent cloud service providers including Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure are set to offer instances powered by Blackwell. Other collaborators intending to create Blackwell endeavours consist of Dell Technologies, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Oracle, Tesla, among others spanning hardware, software, and sovereign clouds.
Alphabet and Google’s Chief Executive, Sundar Pichai, commented: “We appreciate our enduring partnership with NVIDIA and are excited to introduce our Cloud customers and Google teams to the game-changing capabilities of the Blackwell GPU to expedite future advancements.”
The innovative Blackwell architecture along with the required software will bring new advancements in various sectors including engineering, chip design, scientific computing, and generative AI.
Commenting on the same, Mark Zuckerberg, the Founder and CEO of Meta said, “AI is already at the heart of a range of services we provide such as large language models, content recommendations, ads, and safety systems, and it is bound to gain more significance in the near future.”
He articulated his enthusiasm in incorporating NVIDIA’s Blackwell to train their open-source Llama models, thereby creating the future generation of Meta’s AI and consumer goods.”
With the massive performance and efficiency improvements it offers, Blackwell might just be the key in making real-time AI with trillion-parameters a reality for enterprises.
