Introducing Spotify’s New AI-Driven Personalized Playlists Built Through Prompts

Spotify is noted for its successful AI DJ feature, and is now incorporating AI into playlist creation. Spotify, on Monday, launched AI playlists into beta, allowing users the ability to generate a playlist from written prompts.

The feature will first be accessible to users on Android and iOS devices in the U.K. and Australia. Iterations on this feature are planned for upcoming months.

Spotify takes advantage of AI to allow users to request for more specific playlists, such as “songs to serenade my cat” or “beats for a zombie apocalypse,” which go beyond the typical requests based on genre or time frame. Users’ prompts can evoke a range of things, including places, animals, activities, movie characters, colors or emojis. The best playlists, according to the company, are those that combine genres, moods, artists and decades.

The feature also uses Spotify’s understanding of its users’ preferences to personalise the playlists it generates.

Once the playlist has been compiled, the AI can be utilized by users to modify and fine-tune the outcome, with instructions such as “less upbeat” or “more pop”. Songs can be removed from the playlist by swiping them to the left.

Concerning the technology, Spotify claims to use large language models (LLMs) to understand user intentions. Following this, Spotify applies its unique personalization technology, using the data it has related to the listener’s history and tastes, to adhere to the prompt and create a custom, AI-created playlist for the user.

The company exploits a variety of third-party tools to enhance its AI and machine learning experiences.

According to a report by TechCrunch in October 2023, Spotify was working on AI-generated playlists. This news was unveiled when reverse engineers Chris Messina and Alessandro Paluzzi shared screenshots of Spotify’s application code referring to AI-generated playlists “based on your prompts”.

Spotify refrained from commenting on a possible new feature earlier, but a statement from December 2023 on TechCrunch confirmed that they were experimenting with AI-powered playlist creation. This came to light after a user shared a TikTok video highlighting what they referred to as “Spotify’s ChatGPT”.

The function is located in the “Your Library” section of the Spotify application. To find it, tap on the plus (+) symbol in the top right corner. Upon tapping, a pop-up will display the AI Playlist as a new option along with the pre-existing “Playlist” and “Blend” choices.

Spotify also provides prompt suggestions for users who are unsure of what to try. These include phrases like “get focused at work with instrumental electronica,” “fill in the silence with background café music,” “get pumped up with fun, upbeat, and positive songs”, or “explore a niche genre like Witch House” amongst several others.

The AI-generated playlist can be saved by simply clicking on the “Create” button, and it will then be added to the user’s library.

The company emphasizes that the AI possesses boundaries ensuring it does not return offensive prompts or those centered around current events or specific brands.

Spotify has shown significant interest in AI technology, with efforts to enhance its streaming service ongoing for several months. The launch of AI DJ represents this investment. Expanding globally last year, this feature utilizes a blend of Sonantic and OpenAI to fabricate an artificial depiction of Xavier “X” Jernigan’s voice, Spotify’s head of cultural partnerships. He provides personalized song choices to the user. In the previous year, Spotify disclosed that it was directing investments toward in-house research to gain comprehensive insights into AI and large language models.

Daniel Ek, the CEO, has also suggested prospective applications of AI by Spotify. These include podcast summarization, the creation of AI-generated audio advertisements, among others. Additionally, the company is exploring AI technology to replicate a podcast host’s voice for ad readings by hosts.

Prior to AI playlists, Spotify released a similar function, termed Niche Mixes. This allowed users the ability to generate personalized playlists through prompts. However, this product did not utilize AI technology and was relatively more constrained in terms of its language comprehension.
