Microsoft is set to host top executives from South Korea’s leading technology firms next month to strengthen its AI partnerships.

The high-level meeting, dubbed the MS CEO Summit 2024, will be held on 14 May 2024 and feature Microsoft’s founder Bill Gates and Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella. They will engage in closed-door discussions with Kyung Kye-hyun of Samsung, Kwak Noh-jung of SK Hynix, Cho Joo-wan of LG Electronics, and Ryu Young-sang of SK Telecom.

Sources for The Korea Economic Daily suggest that Microsoft plans to explore joint ventures in AI technology across various sectors. Discussions with Samsung and SK Hynix will likely centre on the joint development and supply of AI chips.

Samsung and SK Hynix are noted for their prominence in the global memory chipmaking sector, and they could bolster Microsoft’s server functionalities with advanced technologies such as High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM) AI chips and solid-state drives (SSDs).

Microsoft is expected to partner with LG Electronics on implementing AI technologies in home appliances. This would strengthen Microsoft’s position in the face of competition from companies such as Google and Meta. Microsoft’s collaboration with SK Telecom could lead to further exploration of cloud and 5G services.

These discussions come at an opportune moment, as the international tech environment is prioritising development in AI. If Microsoft’s AI services can be incorporated into products like Samsung smartphones or LG home appliances, Microsoft’s market position could be greatly improved.

It was suggested last month by Kyung of Samsung’s Device Solutions that their new AI accelerators, Mach-1 and Mach-2, will soon be mass produced. These accelerators are designed to maximize the compatibility between GPUs and HBM chips, indicating a potential revolutionary increase in processing speeds. Earlier this month, their company introduced the industry’s first LPDDR5X DRAM aiming to enhance on-device AI.

SK Telecom, under CEO Ryu, leads the Global Telco AI Alliance (GTAA). The consortium involves major global entities like Deutsche Telekom and SingTel, aiming to create AI infrastructure and generative AI services spanning a customer base of over 1.3 billion people globally.

In the previous year, SK Telecom invested $100 million in the AI startup Anthropic to create a large language model (LLM) specifically for telcos. This collaborative venture continues with the Telco AI Platform, a continuous project started by the GTAA.

The MS CEO Summit 2024 provides an chance for improved AI cooperation and technological growth, securing Microsoft’s role as a key participant in the industry.
