Experience New Levels of AI: Sanctuary’s Affordable, High-Learning Humanoid Robot

Sanctuary AI may not be as prominently mentioned as other humanoid robotics firms like Boston Dynamics, Agility, Figure and 1X, but this Canadian company has been a consistent player in the industry. On Thursday, the company announced the introduction of the seventh-generation of their Phoenix line of robots.

In recent iterations, the focus had been on incorporating legs into the design. However, Sanctuary AI is particularly interested in the activities of the robot from the waist upwards. Videos released of the new robot mainly concentrate on the torso system. The Canadian firm emphasizes the robot’s human-like movements during product sorting tasks, and its swift learning capabilities.

The concept is not entirely new, as most media coverage on humanoid robots has centred around mechatronics. This area specifically addresses how these robots appear as they interact with their environment. One recent video from Boston Dynamics perfectly encapsulates this idea as it briefly shows a lot of the robot’s features.

However, moving into the future, robotic intelligence will likely be equally – if not more – significant for these systems. While “general intelligence” is a rather broad and vague term, a majority of roboticists agree that we are probably five to ten years away from robots that can learn new tasks in ways comparable to their human counterparts.

Today’s systems have the capacity to learn tasks quickly despite certain limitations. Sanctuary, as one example, provides evidence that the Phoenix can automate new tasks in less than a day.

Geordie Rose, the co-founder and CEO of Sanctuary, argues that their seventh-generation system is the closest replication of a human currently available in the market. He emphasizes the critical role his system plays in both general-purpose AI robotics and the development of artificial general intelligence.

The time and consistency in performing tasks can vary significantly. The tasks performed in the demo, such as segregating objects of different colors, seem relatively simple and carried out in a controlled environment. Yet, it’s worth acknowledging that Sanctuary has already successfully implemented its previous systems. Furthermore, the company recently broke news about a collaborative project with Magna auto manufacturing facilities.

Primarily, the seventh-generation robot, launched one year post its predecessor, introduces additional enhancements to the line. These comprise of advanced up time, enhanced range of motion, reduced weight, and a more economical bill of materials.
