Data centres, the pillars of our digital landscape, have transcended their traditional roles as mere storage facilities to become dynamic ecosystems. These ecosystems demand robust processing capabilities and efficient global data delivery, driving high energy consumption.

Data centres consist of numerous servers, storage solutions, and intricate networks that manage data flow. They are pivotal for various digital operations, from processing search queries to handling financial transactions and supporting digital communications, often operating quietly in the background. With AI’s growing demands and capabilities, it’s vital to ensure these are well-integrated with data centre infrastructure.

Data processing is fundamental to AI, and the efficiency of this process relies on three main types of processors: the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), the Central Processing Unit (CPU), and the Tensor Processing Unit (TPU).

GPUs excel at handling multiple tasks simultaneously, making them ideal for AI model training. CPUs offer the flexibility required for scaling concurrent operations. Google’s TPU, however, is optimized to execute the maximum amount of AI processes in the minimal amount of time.

The dynamic nature of AI necessitates updates in regulations. For instance, the AI Act proposed by the European Union organizes AI applications into four risk categories: unacceptable, high, limited, and minimal or no risk. Concurrently, the NIS2 Directive has broadened cybersecurity regulations to include digital environments.

Therefore, a significant challenge for data centers and other industries is to stay abreast of these evolving regulations. With AI advancing rapidly, data centers are pressured to keep pace with the shifting regulatory landscape and newly established risk parameters.
