South Korea Sets the Stage for the World’s Largest AI Data Center

South Korea is on track to construct the world’s largest AI data centre, aiming to assert its position as a leader in global technology. This ambitious project is being spearheaded by Fir Hills, a subsidiary of California-based Stock Farm Road, Inc. (SFR), with construction expected to start in the winter of 2025. The data center anticipates generating an initial annual revenue of $3.5 billion.
Situated in the Jeollanam-do Province, this project represents a collaborative effort among industry experts, including SFR co-founder Brian Koo, an heir of LG, and Dr. Amin Badr-El-Din, known for his success in technology and public-private partnerships. Dr. Badr-El-Din emphasized that this endeavor goes beyond technological advancement: “It’s a strategic leap forward for Korea’s global technological leadership,” he stated.
The project, initially valued at over $10 billion, has the potential to expand to $35 billion. Upon its expected completion in 2028, the centre will have a capacity of 3 gigawatts, making it the largest facility of its kind globally. This advanced infrastructure is designed to support the demands of next-generation AI technologies, featuring sophisticated cooling systems, high-speed fibre connections for efficient data transfers, and the ability to handle sudden energy load fluctuations.
The implications of this project extend far beyond technological capabilities, promising significant economic benefits. It is projected to create over 10,000 jobs across various sectors, including energy management, renewable energy production, and equipment manufacturing. Moreover, the data centre will serve millions, catering to the needs of numerous major corporations, including hyperscalers and developers.
This development marks just the beginning of SFR’s broader strategy. The company has plans to forge partnerships for AI infrastructure across Asia, Europe, and the United States within the next 18 months. Leveraging its expertise in Energy-to-Intelligence (e2i²), SFR aims to transform the traditional energy framework into a foundation for advanced AI technologies.
South Korea’s rapid evolution into a technological hub over the past decade is underscored by the prowess of companies like Samsung, LG, and Hyundai. The Jeollanam-do AI data centre signifies a critical step in fostering innovation through effective public-private collaborations, positioning Korea to drive a significant digital industrial revolution.
