DOJ Proposes Google Divestiture of Chrome Amidst Green Light for AI Investments
The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has reiterated its stance that Google must divest its web browser, Chrome, according to a recent court filing. This push for divestment isn’t new; it was first proposed last year under the Biden administration but remains unchanged even with the transition to the Trump administration.
In addition to the divestment of Chrome, the DOJ is maintaining its prohibition on Google’s search-related payments to distribution partners. They argue that Google’s conduct has severely impacted market competition, leading to its monopolistic position.
However, there is a notable shift regarding artificial intelligence (AI) investments. Previously, the DOJ sought a complete divestiture of Google’s AI investments, but now they are only requiring prior notification for future investments. This change means that Google’s substantial funding in AI ventures, including billions invested in Anthropic, will no longer be part of the divestment demand.
The DOJ emphasized the importance of addressing what it calls Google’s "illegal conduct," which has allegedly built an economic giant that hinders fair competition. The ongoing legal battle stems from antitrust lawsuits filed by the DOJ and 38 state attorneys general, which led to a ruling that Google acted in violation of antitrust laws to maintain its search engine dominance.
As the case progresses, Google plans to appeal the ruling but has also offered an alternative proposal aimed at addressing the court’s concerns. A hearing on the matter is scheduled for April, where both parties will present their arguments.
