Nvidia and Google DeepMind Join Forces to Power Disney’s Adorable Robots
Nvidia is partnering with Disney Research and Google DeepMind to create Newton, a physics engine designed to simulate robotic movements in real-world scenarios. This announcement was made by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang at GTC 2025. Disney will be one of the first to utilize Newton for its advanced entertainment robots, including the Star Wars-inspired BDX droids, which made a special appearance during Huang’s keynote.
Nvidia plans to release an early open-source version of Newton later in 2025. The collaboration is pivotal for Disney, which has been trying to integrate robots into its theme parks for years. Recent demonstrations, like those at SXSW 2025, highlight Disney’s confidence in the technology, planning to launch these robots across various park locations starting next year.
According to Kyle Laughlin, Senior VP of Disney Imagineering, this partnership will significantly enhance the capabilities of future Disney robots, allowing them to be more expressive and efficiently learn complex tasks. Newton aims to address challenges in how robots interact with the physical world, providing developers with tools to simulate interactions involving various materials.
The engine is designed to be highly customizable, allowing for programming of robotic interactions with deformable objects such as food and cloth. Additionally, Newton will be compatible with Google DeepMind’s collection of robotic development tools, including its physics engine, MuJoCo, known for simulating multi-joint robotic movements.
Along with Newton, Nvidia unveiled other innovations at GTC 2025, including an AI foundation model called Groot N1, engineered to enhance robots’ perception and reasoning abilities, as well as a roadmap for its next-generation AI chips, Blackwell Ultra and Rubin.
