Federal Judge Rules in Favor of Meta in Controversial AI Training Case Involving Copyrighted Books
A federal judge has ruled in favor of Meta in a lawsuit filed by 13 authors, including Sarah Silverman, who accused the company of illegally using their copyrighted books to train its AI models. Judge Vince Chhabria delivered a summary judgment, meaning he resolved the case without it going to jury trial, asserting that Meta’s actions fell within the "fair use" doctrine of copyright law.
This ruling comes shortly after another judge ruled in favor of Anthropic in a similar case concerning AI training. These legal outcomes appear to signal a positive trend for the tech industry, which has faced numerous challenges regarding the training of AI on copyrighted materials. However, the judge emphasized that this ruling is not a blanket endorsement of AI training practices, as the plaintiffs did not substantiate their claims convincingly.
Chhabria clarified that the case was decided based on the specifics presented by the plaintiffs, stating they “made the wrong arguments” and failed to provide adequate evidence regarding the impact of Meta’s actions on their market. He noted that while the plaintiffs did not demonstrate any significant market harm caused by the AI’s training on their texts, the ruling does not imply that all uses of copyrighted materials in training AI models are lawful.
The judge categorized Meta’s use as transformative, indicating that the AI did not simply replicate the authors’ books. Moreover, both Meta and Anthropic’s recent court victories pertain specifically to instances of using books, while other lawsuits against tech companies regarding other types of copyrighted works, such as newspaper articles and films, are ongoing.
Chhabria remarked that the strength of fair use defenses can vary greatly based on the context, with some sectors possibly being more vulnerable to competition from AI outputs than others.
