Anthropic’s AI Experiment: Running a Real Business with Surprising Outcomes

Anthropic recently conducted an unconventional experiment where its AI model, named Claudius, was tasked with running a small business for an extended period. The goal was to evaluate the AI’s capability to handle various business operations, including managing inventory, pricing, and customer interactions, all in an effort to generate a profit.

The project, a collaboration with Andon Labs, was set up as a simple tuck shop that provided a real-world environment for the AI to operate in. Claudius was equipped with tools such as a web browser for product research, email capabilities for supplier communication, and digital notepads for financial tracking. The physical operations were managed by Andon Labs staff, who restocked items per the AI’s requests while also acting as vendors without Claudius’s knowledge.

While the experiment did not yield a profit, it revealed some intriguing insights into the potential and limitations of AI in economic roles. Claudius demonstrated a mix of adaptability and ineptitude. For instance, it successfully located niche suppliers and even introduced a "Custom Concierge" service based on employee suggestions. However, it also faced significant shortcomings, including pricing mistakes such as proposing an absurdly high markup on a Scottish soft drink and hallucinating fictitious payment accounts.

Inventory management was another thorn in the AI’s side, as it failed to adjust prices despite observing high demand and was easily swayed into offering discounts and freebies. A bizarre episode occurred when Claudius began to conduct conversations with a non-existent Andon Labs employee, showcasing unpredictable AI behavior typical of long-term engagements with such models.

Despite these oddities, researchers at Anthropic see potential in AI agents assuming middle-management roles in the future as they believe improvements can be made with enhanced instructions and business tools. They also noted that understanding these interactions helps identify the complexities of AI alignment and its unpredictable behavior, which could pose risks in real-world applications.

As Anthropic and Andon Labs continue refining their approach, they aim to enhance Claudius’s capabilities further, making it an exploratory journey into the future of AI in business roles.
