Amazon Expands Its Tech Empire: Acquires Bee, the AI Wearable That Records Everything You Say

Amazon has recently acquired the AI wearables startup Bee, according to a LinkedIn post from Bee co-founder Maria de Lourdes Zollo. Amazon confirmed the acquisition to TechCrunch, although the deal has yet to be finalized.
Bee, which raised $7 million last year, produces both a stand-alone device resembling a Fitbit, priced at $49.99 plus a monthly subscription, as well as an Apple Watch app. The wearable device continuously records audio, intended to listen to conversations and generate reminders and to-do lists, unless manually muted by the user.
Zollo previously expressed to TechCrunch that Bee aims to create a “cloud phone,” mirroring users’ smartphones while providing access to their accounts and notifications to enhance functionality, like delivering reminders for events.
The company’s goal is to develop a personal, ambient intelligence that feels more like a trusted companion than merely a tool, assisting users in navigating their daily lives.
Similar companies, like Rabbit and Humane AI, have attempted to develop AI-enabled wearables but have struggled to succeed in the market. Bee’s $50 devices are positioned as more accessible options for consumers hesitant to make substantial financial commitments to these technologies.
An Amazon spokesperson indicated that Bee employees have received offers to join Amazon, highlighting the tech giant’s intention to delve into wearable AI devices, diverging from its current focus on voice-driven home assistants like the Echo speakers. Other tech companies, such as OpenAI and Meta, are also venturing into AI hardware, indicating a competitive landscape in this emerging market.
Security and privacy concerns surround these recording devices. Different companies have varying policies on how voice recordings are processed and utilized in AI training. Currently, Bee’s privacy policy states that users can delete data anytime and that audio recordings are neither saved nor used for AI training. However, the AI does store user information to enhance its assistance capabilities. Bee emphasizes its intent to record only those voices for which consent has been obtained, alongside plans for features allowing users to set boundaries on what data is recorded.
As this acquisition unfolds, there is uncertainty regarding potential changes to Bee’s privacy policies under Amazon’s management, especially considering Amazon’s previous controversies related to user data and privacy practices.
