AI Transforms ‘Wizard of Oz’ into a Stunning Visual Experience for Giant Sphere Screen

The massive venue known as the Sphere in Las Vegas is set to screen its first classic movie, "The Wizard of Oz," starting August 28. However, this experience goes beyond simply projecting the film onto Sphere’s impressive 160,000 square foot, wraparound LED screen.

According to Sphere Entertainment CEO James Dolan, a dedicated team of 2,000 people is working on enhancing the movie. They are leveraging AI technology to not only improve the film’s resolution but also to expand the visuals beyond the original frame.

Turner Classic Movies presenter Ben Mankiewicz highlighted this innovative process, stating that AI allows for a grainy close-up of Dorothy to become richly detailed, and through a technique known as outpainting, viewers can see more of the scenery, such as the Scarecrow, Yellow Brick Road, and the distant mountains of Oz. In some instances, this expanded frame even generates new performances by the original actors.

Dolan emphasized that the intent behind these modifications is not to alter the film, but rather to immerse audiences into the story, making them feel as if they are part of the original shooting process.
