Groq: Nvidia AI Chip Challenger Set to Raise Funds at $6 Billion Valuation

AI chip startup Groq is reportedly in discussions to secure a fresh $600 million funding round, aiming for a near $6 billion valuation, as per sources from Bloomberg. This new valuation marks a significant increase from Groq’s previous valuation of $2.8 billion when it raised $640 million in August 2024. Over its history, Groq has collectively raised around $1 billion.

The upcoming funding round is led by Austin-based firm Disruptive. This follows a previous round in November, which was backed by BlackRock along with other investors such as Neuberger Berman, Type One Ventures, Cisco, KDDI, and the Samsung Catalyst Fund.

Founded by Jonathan Ross, a veteran from Google who developed the Tensor Processing Unit chip, Groq emerged from stealth mode in 2016. The company has recently announced strategic partnerships, including an exclusive agreement with Bell Canada for a large AI infrastructure project and a collaboration with Meta to enhance AI infrastructure for Llama 4 inference.

Groq’s rapid growth reflects its ambition to challenge established players in the AI chip market, particularly Nvidia.
