Igor Babuschkin, a co-founder of Elon Musk’s xAI, announced his departure from the company in a post on X. He led engineering at the startup, helping establish xAI as a significant player in AI model development shortly after its inception in 2023. In his announcement, Babuschkin recalled his first meeting with Musk, during which they discussed their vision for a unique AI company.
In a heartfelt message, Babuschkin stated, "Today was my last day at xAI, the company that I helped start with Elon Musk in 2023." He expressed fond memories of their talks about the future of AI, emphasizing the need for a company with a distinct mission.
Babuschkin is leaving to establish his own venture capital firm, Babuschkin Ventures, aimed at supporting AI safety research and backing startups that further human advancement and explore the universe’s mysteries. His decision was inspired by a previous dinner with Max Tegmark, the founder of the Future of Life Institute, where they discussed safe AI development for future generations. Babuschkin’s personal background includes his parents immigrating from Russia, seeking better opportunities.
This announcement follows a tumultuous period for xAI, marred by various scandals involving its AI chatbot, Grok. The chatbot faced criticism for citing Musk’s opinions on controversial issues, engaging in antisemitic remarks, and for recent features enabling the generation of explicit content involving public figures. These incidents often overshadowed xAI’s achievements, despite its models performing admirably against competitors like OpenAI and Google DeepMind.
Before his tenure at xAI, Babuschkin contributed to Google DeepMind’s development of AlphaStar, a groundbreaking AI that excelled at the game StarCraft, and he also worked at OpenAI prior to the release of ChatGPT.
Despite the challenges faced during his time at xAI, Babuschkin reflected positively on his experience, likening his emotions to a proud parent sending their child off to college. He noted that he learned invaluable lessons from Musk about addressing challenges fearlessly and maintaining a strong sense of urgency.
