Nvidia Sees Record Sales Boosted by the Ongoing AI Boom
Nvidia has reported impressive sales figures, highlighting its continued dominance in the AI sector. For the second quarter, the company achieved $46.7 billion in revenue, representing a remarkable 56% increase year-over-year. This growth was primarily driven by its data center business, which also saw a 56% increase, fueled by high demand for its cutting-edge GPUs.
The net income for the quarter rose to $26.4 billion, a 59% jump from the previous year. A significant portion of Nvidia’s revenue, amounting to $41.1 billion, came from data center sales, with $27 billion derived from its latest chip technology, Blackwell. CEO Jensen Huang emphasized the significance of Blackwell, stating it is “the AI platform the world has been waiting for,” as the company forecasts a massive rise in AI infrastructure spending, estimating $3 to $4 trillion over the next five years.
Nvidia’s involvement in the launch of OpenAI’s open-source GPT models was noteworthy, with its Blackwell system processing an impressive “1.5 million tokens per second.”
However, the company faced challenges in selling its chips in the Chinese market due to ongoing geopolitical tensions. Nvidia did not report any sales of its China-focused H20 chip in the last quarter, although it managed $650 million in sales of H20 chips outside of China. The CFO, Colette Kress, indicated that uncertainty over export tax arrangements and ongoing restrictions has complicated shipments to Chinese customers.
The third-quarter outlook is cautious, as Nvidia projects revenues of about $54 billion, but this estimate does not incorporate any H20 shipments to China. The changing geopolitical landscape, particularly the restrictions on advanced GPU sales to Chinese entities, continues to limit Nvidia’s potential growth in that region.
