Anthropic Appoints New CTO to Advance AI Infrastructure Initiatives
Anthropic has appointed Rahul Patil as its new Chief Technical Officer (CTO), succeeding co-founder Sam McCandlish, who transitions to the role of chief architect. Patil began his tenure at Anthropic earlier this week and will oversee key areas including compute, infrastructure, inference, and a variety of engineering tasks.
The restructuring of Anthropic’s technical group aims to enhance collaboration between its product-engineering team and the infrastructure and inference teams. McCandlish, in his new position, will concentrate on pre-training and large-scale model training, continuing the work he has been leading.
This leadership change comes as Anthropic faces stiff competition in the AI infrastructure landscape, primarily from giants like OpenAI and Meta, both of which have invested heavily in their computing capabilities. Meta’s plans include spending up to $600 billion on U.S. infrastructure by the end of 2028, while OpenAI has made similar financial commitments through projects with Oracle.
The company’s own infrastructure needs are growing, especially due to the popularity of its Claude products, which have strained existing resources. To manage this, Anthropic has previously implemented rate limits for its services, allowing specific hours of usage to mitigate infrastructure overload.
Patil brings over two decades of engineering experience, having previously served as CTO at Stripe and worked in senior roles at Oracle, Amazon, and Microsoft. Anthropic’s president, Daniela Amodei, expressed confidence in Patil’s ability to build and scale dependable infrastructure essential for enterprise-level demands.
