Bret Taylor’s Sierra Achieves $100M ARR in Just Under Two Years!

Sierra, a startup founded just 21 months ago in San Francisco, has announced that it has achieved a remarkable $100 million in annual revenue run rate (ARR). Specializing in customer service AI agents for enterprises, Sierra’s rapid growth is indicative of increasing adoption of AI solutions across various industries.
Co-founders Bret Taylor, a former co-CEO of Salesforce, and Clay Bavor, a long-standing Google executive, expressed their astonishment at the quicker-than-expected growth of their company, noting in their blog, “That’s a heck of a lot quicker than we expected.”
Sierra’s clientele includes notable tech companies like Deliveroo, Discord, and Rivian, as well as established brands outside the tech sphere, such as ADT and Cigna. The founders originally anticipated that only tech companies would be eager to experiment with AI customer service agents, but they were pleasantly surprised to find that traditional businesses are also embracing this innovative technology.
The company promises to deliver AI agents capable of performing various tasks such as authenticating healthcare patients, processing returns, and assisting with mortgage applications—services that previously required human agents.
Even though Sierra faces competition from other startups like Decagon and Intercom, it claims to lead the AI customer service sector. Recently valued at $10 billion following a $350 million funding round led by Greenoaks Capital, Sierra’s valuation reflects its impressive growth, standing at a 100x revenue multiple.
The startup operates on an outcome-based pricing model, charging clients based on completed tasks instead of a flat subscription fee. Taylor and Bavor’s partnership began at Google in 2005, where Taylor had a hand in creating Google Maps and later co-founded FriendFeed, which Facebook later acquired.
After Taylor’s tenure at Salesforce ended in 2023, Bavor invited him to lunch, where they decided to start Sierra together. The swift growth and performance of Sierra demonstrate how enterprises are increasingly integrating AI into customer service functions.
