HTB AI Range: Pioneering Experiments in Cyber-Resilience Training

The cybersecurity training platform Hack The Box (HTB) has introduced the HTB AI Range, a new environment tailored for organizations to test autonomous AI security agents. This innovative platform allows AI and human cybersecurity professionals to collaborate in a setting that replicates real-world conditions. The primary aim of this initiative is to evaluate the effectiveness of both AI and human defenders in protecting IT infrastructures from cyber threats.

Recognizing the vulnerabilities that exist not only in traditional IT systems but also in AI models, HTB emphasizes the need for a realistic testing atmosphere. This will enable organizations to understand how well their AI-based security solutions can defend against attacks, thereby mitigating risks before these systems are deployed in real scenarios.

Functionality of HTB AI Range

The HTB AI Range simulates the complexities of an enterprise environment, featuring thousands of constantly updated offensive and defensive targets. It is constructed to align with established cybersecurity frameworks such as MITRE ATT&CK, NIST/NICE guidelines, and the OWASP Top 10.

In a recent exercise, AI agents demonstrated their capabilities by successfully solving 19 out of 20 basic challenges. However, human teams surpassed the AI in more complex, multi-step challenges, highlighting the ongoing importance of human insight, especially in high-stakes cybersecurity tasks.

Addressing the Skills Gap

Organizations can utilize the AI Range to validate their existing security systems against AI-driven threats, giving their cybersecurity teams firsthand experience with AI vulnerabilities, and enhancing their defenses with the help of agentic AI. HTB suggests that these practices could assist in justifying cybersecurity investments to stakeholders.

The AI Range facilitates continuous validation and testing of cybersecurity measures, which HTB argues is more effective than traditional static audits or penetration testing. This aligns with a model of continuous threat exposure management (CTEM).

To further address the evolving landscape of AI in cybersecurity, HTB plans to launch an AI Red Teamer Certification early next year to quantify the skills required to enhance AI defenses.

As organizations adapt to the rise of AI in cybersecurity, solutions like the HTB AI Range could become essential parts of their overall security strategies. Gerasimos Marketos, the Chief Product Officer at Hack The Box, affirms the platform’s purpose: "We’re addressing the urgent need to continuously validate AI systems in realistic operational contexts."

In this evolving cybersecurity scenario, Haris Pylarinos, CEO of Hack The Box, highlights that for two years, they have been developing AI-driven learning paths and research initiatives where machines and humans can interact, compete, and grow together. This approach is aimed at redefining defense mechanisms as threats evolve.
