YouTubers Take Legal Action Against Snap Over Copyright Infringement in AI Training
A group of YouTubers has accused Snap of copyright infringement, joining a wave of lawsuits against tech companies for using their video content without permission in developing AI models. The plaintiffs, who manage three YouTube channels with a total of 6.2 million subscribers, allege that Snap trained its AI systems on their videos to enhance features like the “Imagine Lens” tool that allows users to edit images using textual prompts.
The lawsuit, which has been filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, claims that Snap utilized a video-language dataset called HD-VILA-100M and others meant strictly for academic or research purposes. The YouTubers argue that Snap bypassed YouTube’s terms of service, which prohibit the commercial use of such datasets.
This legal action is being led by the creators of the h3h3 YouTube channel, alongside smaller channels like MrShortGame Golf and Golfholics. The suit seeks statutory damages and a permanent injunction to prevent further infringement.
The YouTubers are not alone; previous lawsuits have been filed against other tech giants, including Nvidia, Meta, and ByteDance, under similar claims. The ongoing legal landscape reflects a broader trend where content creators are pushing back against AI companies that allegedly exploit their work without compensation.
Many such cases are still in litigation, with judges have sided with tech companies in some instances while others have seen settlements reached.
