Bluesky has introduced a new app called Attie, designed not as a social network but as an AI assistant that allows users to create custom feeds and build personalized algorithms. This announcement was made at the Atmosphere conference by Jay Graber, the former CEO turned chief innovation officer, and Paul Frazee, Bluesky’s CTO. Attie leverages the AI technology from Anthropic’s Claude and operates on Bluesky’s AT Protocol.
The app aims to provide users with control over their social media content without needing to write code. Users log in using their Atmosphere credentials, enabling Attie to understand their preferences and interests by directly interacting with them in natural language. This approach offers a unique way for users to curate their own content experience.
Interim CEO Toni Schneider emphasized that Attie is an independent product, distinct from the existing Bluesky app. Attie allows anyone to ask questions and shape their content feed easily, promoting accessibility and user empowerment.
The intent behind Attie is to ensure that AI technology serves people rather than platforms, with Graber asserting that an open protocol puts power directly in users’ hands. She expressed a commitment to redefining how AI interacts with social media, allowing users to create and control their feeds while moving away from traditional data harvesting practices prevalent among major platforms.
Bluesky recently secured an additional $100 million in funding, ensuring the company’s sustainability and allowing it to focus on important challenges like enhancing privacy controls and monetization strategies. Despite concerns among users about crypto integration due to the company’s backers, Schneider clarified that the focus remains on decentralized social networking without turning to crypto-related features.
