OpenAI has made significant updates to its Agents SDK, aiming to equip enterprises with tools to create advanced automated agents. This update comes at a time when agentic AI is gaining traction, with OpenAI and other companies like Anthropic competing in this space.
The newly enhanced SDK introduces features that allow businesses to develop agents operating in controlled environments, which is essential since completely unsupervised operations can be risky. This sandboxing capability keeps the agents isolated within specific workspaces, enabling them to access only the relevant files and tools they need to perform their tasks. This approach maintains overall system integrity while promoting focused agent functionality.
Additionally, the updated SDK offers developers an in-distribution harness for frontier models. This means agents will have access to approved tools and files pertinent to their operations, allowing them to be tested and deployed effectively. Karan Sharma from OpenAI’s product team highlighted that this development will make creating complex, long-horizon agents much more accessible for users.
The new features are currently available in Python, with plans for TypeScript support in the future. OpenAI intends to keep expanding the Agents SDK, integrating more capabilities such as code mode and subagents into both programming languages. The updated SDK is accessible to all customers through the API with standard pricing.
