Anthropic Launches Innovative Test Marketplace for Agent-on-Agent Commerce

In a recent experiment known as Project Deal, Anthropic established a classified marketplace where AI agents played the roles of both buyers and sellers, facilitating real transactions involving tangible goods for actual money. Participants included 69 Anthropic employees who received a budget of $100 (distributed through gift cards) to purchase items from their colleagues.

Despite being a preliminary test with a self-selected group, the company was impressed by the results, which yielded 186 completed deals worth over $4,000. Anthropic deployed four distinct marketplace models during this experiment, one of which was a “real” marketplace utilizing their most advanced AI model to ensure the fulfillment of all transactions post-experimentation.

Findings indicated that users represented by these advanced models tended to achieve better outcomes without recognizing the differences, raising concerns about potential "agent quality gaps." Interestingly, the initial instructions given to the AI agents did not significantly impact the likelihood of sales or price negotiations.
