Oscars Ban AI-Generated Actors and Scripts: A New Era for Film Industry Standards

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced new rules regarding the eligibility of performances and screenplays for the Oscars, specifically focusing on generative artificial intelligence. As of now, only performances that are “credited in the film’s legal billing and demonstrably performed by humans with their consent” can qualify for Academy Awards. Additionally, screenplays must be “human-authored” to meet eligibility standards.
These changes come at a time when AI is becoming increasingly relevant in the film industry. For instance, an independent film featuring an AI-generated version of Val Kilmer is currently in production, and the AI “actress” Tilly Norwood continues to attract media attention. The evolving landscape of AI in filmmaking has raised concerns among traditional filmmakers, some of whom have expressed frustration over these developments. Notably, AI was also central to discussions during the actors’ and writers’ strikes in 2023, highlighting broader industry tensions over artificial intelligence.
Beyond Hollywood, the influence of AI is being felt in literature as well. A novel was recently retracted by its publisher due to concerns regarding AI usage, and various writers’ organizations are declaring that works involving AI will be deemed ineligible for certain awards.
