Barry Diller on Trust and the Future of AGI: Why He Believes It’s Irrelevant

Billionaire media mogul Barry Diller has expressed his trust in OpenAI CEO Sam Altman amidst concerns from former colleagues about Altman’s trustworthiness. Speaking at The Wall Street Journal’s “Future of Everything” conference, Diller supported Altman despite allegations of manipulative behavior associated with him.

When asked if people should trust Altman to ensure AI serves humanity’s best interests, Diller highlighted the concept of artificial general intelligence (AGI) and its potential to surpass human capabilities. He stated that while he believes in Altman’s sincerity, the greater concern lies in the unpredictable outcomes of AI technology itself.

Diller pointed out, “One of the big issues with AI is it goes way beyond trust.” He cautioned that the true effects of AI developments may surprise those creating them, emphasizing the "great unknown" that accompanies advancing technology. Diller noted the necessity for society to consider guardrails as AGI approaches.

Despite his concerns, he maintains that most leaders in the AI space are responsible stewards. However, Diller reiterated the importance of recognizing the unknowns inherent in AGI, warning that if humans do not impose boundaries, the technology could create its own set of rules.
