Humanoid Robots: The Rise of Physical AI in Manufacturing Environments

British technology firm Humanoid is set to deploy humanoid robots in collaboration with Schaeffler, a German industrial supplier, for use in their factories. According to reports, this partnership anticipates the introduction of between 1,000 and 2,000 robots across Schaeffler’s manufacturing locations by 2032, with the first deployment scheduled between December 2026 and June 2027.

The initial phase of the project involves the use of these robots for box handling and nearly full-scale testing at two Schaeffler sites in Germany—Herzogenaurach and Schweinfurt. Humanoid will also assist in integrating their robots into existing production lines, building on a technology partnership the two companies formed earlier this year.

Schaeffler’s initiative involves testing humanoid robots for various physical tasks within production and warehousing environments, starting with the movement and handling of materials. Additionally, Schaeffler has agreed to become Humanoid’s preferred supplier for joint actuators through 2031. This partnership is expected to cover over half of Humanoid’s demand for wheeled humanoid platforms, translating to at least 1 million actuators during the agreement period.

In a related development, South Korean AI startup RLWRLD is also gathering motion data from workers in diverse settings, including hotels, logistics sites, and retail environments. The company employs body cameras to record worker movements, focusing on tasks like folding napkins or lifting goods. This data helps train robots to replicate human dexterity and efficiency in performing physical tasks.

RLWRLD aims to launch AI robots for industrial usage by approximately 2028. Major corporations, including Hyundai and Samsung, are also investing in humanoids and AI-driven factories, with ambitions to implement these technologies within the coming years.

However, the rise of robotics has prompted concerns among labor groups. Unions warn against the potential risk to employment and the implications for skilled labor pipelines. Discussions surrounding job security and AI adoption remain paramount, as companies like Lotte Hotel explore integrating robots to perform cleaning and support roles, looking towards a future where humanoids handle significant event preparation tasks.

As these technological advancements continue, it is vital for employers and governmental bodies to engage with the workforce to address concerns and ensure a collaborative transition to AI-supported environments.
