Ford Rehires ‘Gray Beard’ Engineers as AI Initiatives Face Challenges

Ford has recently rehired 350 experienced engineers, known as "gray beard" engineers, after facing challenges with their artificial intelligence and automated quality systems. The company found these AI tools were not meeting their quality standards, prompting them to bring back technical specialists to identify failure points before parts reach production.

Chief Operating Officer Kumar Galhotra acknowledged that Ford had been increasingly reliant on automation, which led to disappointing results. In contrast, Charles Poon, Ford’s vice president of vehicle hardware engineering, remarked on the initial misstep of assuming that AI could ensure high-quality products just by integrating design requirements.

Nevertheless, Ford plans to continue integrating AI into its processes. The rehired engineers will play a critical role in mentoring younger employees and revamping AI systems, a move which the automaker anticipates will save $1 billion in costs this year. This strategic shift appears to be paying off, as Ford regained its position as a leader in quality, according to the JD Power Initial Quality Survey released recently.
