Situational Awareness Hedge Fund Bets Big: $400M Investment in Chip Startup Source Foundry

Embattled hedge fund Situational Awareness has made a significant move by investing $400 million into Source Foundry, a startup focused on enhancing chip manufacturing processes. Founded by Stanford researchers, Source Foundry aims to make chip production faster and more economical. This latest investment brings Situational Awareness’s total stake in the startup to $500 million.
Founded in 2024 by Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former OpenAI researcher lacking trading experience, Situational Awareness initially saw promising returns. However, the fund encountered major challenges as the market for AI infrastructure stocks declined. Recently, the fund sold off most of its public portfolio to Citadel, while retaining its shares in Anthropic. Consequently, assets under management at the fund have dropped from $20 billion to $10 billion.
Despite these setbacks, Aschenbrenner remained resilient, managing to celebrate his wedding amidst the financial turmoil.
