OneRail Leverages Nvidia AI for Real-Time Optimization of Last-Mile Delivery
OneRail has introduced an innovative AI delivery platform called OmniSTAR, leveraging Nvidia technology to optimize last-mile delivery for retailers, wholesalers, and distributors. The system analyzes various delivery options—such as in-house fleets, couriers, and parcel carriers—to identify the most cost-effective method that meets the desired service level.
OmniSTAR integrates Nvidia’s cuOpt decision optimization engine and cuDF data processing software with OneRail’s extensive delivery data. This powerful combination allows the platform to perform routing and delivery mode calculations significantly faster, with some computations reduced from 20 minutes to under 2 minutes. This rapid processing facilitates real-time optimization during actual delivery operations, maximizing profit margins in a costly last-mile delivery environment.
In their approach, OneRail employs advanced machine-learning models to predict various aspects of the delivery process, including estimated service times and the likelihood of successful first-attempt deliveries. These predictions guide the optimization systems, which determine the best execution method for each order.
Nvidia’s cuOpt, an open-source, GPU-accelerated optimization library, underpins OmniSTAR by assessing different parameters such as vehicle costs and travel requirements while calculating the most efficient routes. Rather than exhaustively testing every possible option, cuOpt generates candidate solutions, refining them iteratively to yield high-quality results quickly.
Notably, OneRail highlighted that many retailers still depend on static rules for their delivery planning; OmniSTAR aims to introduce a dynamic evaluation of delivery combinations through its fast computational abilities.
OmniSTAR is already in use by enterprise clients. OneRail reports successful outcomes from US Foods, which adjusted pricing and optimized delivery configurations based on data obtained from the platform. Another unnamed client, a large tire distributor, achieved $40 million in cost savings over three years using OmniSTAR. The platform is projected to exceed $6 billion in gross merchandise volume in the fourth quarter of 2026.
The collaboration between OneRail and Nvidia lasted three years and involved direct engagement with Nvidia’s engineering team. The OmniSTAR system illustrates the potential of advanced AI technologies to optimize logistics and improve efficiencies in an integral part of supply chain management.
