Hospitals’ implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in insurance claims processing has resulted in an additional $942 million in healthcare spending over a two-year period, according to an analysis by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA). The analysis reveals a notable increase in the documentation of patients with complex conditions, yet it highlights a gap between medical coding practices and the actual treatments provided, indicating that there is no evidence of an improved quality of care delivered alongside increased spending.
Reports, including one from The New York Times, indicate that this trend exemplifies how AI is contributing to rising healthcare costs. While disputes between hospitals and insurers over claims are longstanding, the introduction of AI appears to exacerbate these conflicts.
Dr. Shiv Rao, founder of the AI startup Abridge, expressed concerns about the potential for a problematic future dominated by AI, where automated systems battle each other. However, he also suggested that AI might help alleviate some tensions and lower costs in the long run.
In a candid assessment, Luke Chalker, BCBSA’s senior vice president, described the current scenario not as a contention but rather as an overwhelming disadvantage for insurers. He remarked that the situation resembles a "one-sided blood bath," with insurers steadily losing ground.
