AI Companion Apps Set to Generate $120 Million in Revenue by 2025
Demand for AI companion applications is on the rise, with the industry projected to generate $120 million by the end of 2025. Data from app intelligence firm Appfigures reveals that there are currently 337 active AI companion apps, with 128 launched in just the first half of 2025. These apps, distinct from general-purpose chatbots, enable users to engage in conversations with customizable characters ranging from friends and partners to fantasy figures.
As of July 2025, AI companion apps have amassed 220 million downloads globally, indicating an impressive 88% increase from the previous year, with downloads reaching 60 million in the first half alone. Revenue generation for these apps has also surged, with a total of $221 million reported worldwide—64% higher than the same period in 2024.
The revenue distribution is skewed, as the top 10% of AI companion apps account for 89% of the total revenue, with around 33 apps surpassing $1 million in lifetime consumer spending. The average revenue per download has also increased, rising from $0.52 in 2024 to $1.18 in 2025.
While small developers are making their mark in this space, larger companies like xAI are joining the fray, introducing their own AI companions, including unique characters like an anime girl and a snarky fox. Meanwhile, ChatGPT launched an upgrade to GPT-5, which sparked discussions among users who felt a connection to the older model, leading OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to temporarily reinstate version 4o.
The popularity of AI companion apps has shown a notable tendency towards characters interpreted as romantic partners, as many apps incorporate terms like “girlfriend” in their names—17% of active apps use this terminology compared to only 4% that use “boyfriend.”
