Publisher Withdraws ‘Shy Girl’ Horror Novel Amidst AI Controversies

Hachette Book Group has decided to halt the publication of the horror novel "Shy Girl" due to concerns that artificial intelligence may have been used to produce its text. The book was initially set for release this spring in the United States and will also be removed from shelves in the United Kingdom, where it had already been made available.

The publisher’s decision followed a comprehensive review of the manuscript. However, discussions among readers on platforms like GoodReads and YouTube had already suggested that the book might have been generated by AI. Notably, The New York Times contacted Hachette regarding these allegations just one day prior to the announcement.

In a statement to the NYT, author Mia Ballard denied using AI for her novel, attributing the issue to a hired acquaintance who edited the self-published version of "Shy Girl." Ballard has indicated plans to pursue legal action, expressing that the situation has severely impacted her mental health and tarnished her reputation for something she did not personally do.

Industry observers, including writer Lincoln Michel, have pointed out that major U.S. publishers typically do not conduct extensive editing when acquiring previously published works.
