Bunkerhill Secures $55 Million to Expand Agentic AI Solutions in Healthcare Systems

Bunkerhill Health has successfully raised $55 million in funding to enhance its agentic AI platform, Carebricks. This Series B funding round saw continued support from notable investors like Sequoia Capital, Felicis, Optum Ventures, and Y Combinator. The primary question in the healthcare sector remains whether the new software can effectively operate within active hospital environments.
Bunkerhill aims to bridge the gap between AI models that succeed in controlled settings and those that function with real clinical data in large healthcare institutions. With the U.S. healthcare spending reaching $5.3 trillion in 2024 and ongoing labor shortages, Bunkerhill addresses the disparity between healthcare ambitions and operational capabilities. The company believes future investment should prioritize software that enables clinicians to implement their ideas rather than merely documenting them.
Nishith Khandwala, Co-Founder and CEO of Bunkerhill Health, stated, “Medicine has advanced faster than our healthcare system’s ability to operationalize it.” He emphasized the opportunities that exist for better patient care, which health systems currently lack the manpower to pursue. Carebricks allows hospitals to create custom AI agents, with applications extending from reviewing cardiology images for heart disease to managing administrative tasks that typically consume valuable staff time.
Cleveland Clinic, the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), and Intermountain Health are among the current users of the platform. UTMB’s extensive use of Carebricks features over 20 operational AI agents, promising significant improvements in various areas from clinical care to administrative efficiency. For instance, a cardiology imaging agent successfully identified a patient at risk for a heart attack, leading to life-saving interventions.
Dr. Peter McCaffrey, UTMB’s Chief AI Officer, reported remarkable improvements in patient outcomes and operational efficiency, with some agents significantly reducing average wait times for specialist care. While these results are promising, they are specific to UTMB’s settings and not universally applicable to other health systems.
Despite the advancements, health systems must still navigate challenges related to governance and liability surrounding AI deployment. Bunkerhill intends to allocate the newly acquired funding to broaden Carebricks’ applications and solidify governance measures.
The growing number of AI agents in use at UTMB positions Bunkerhill favorably against its competitors, but the sustainability of these advancements rests on the capacity of health systems to manage and oversee the technology effectively as it scales.
