Amazon Addresses Data Center Backlash: Ending NDA Practices for Greater Transparency

Amazon Web Services (AWS) CEO Matt Garman has announced that the company will no longer utilize nondisclosure agreements (NDAs) in its communications with government agencies regarding the establishment of new data centers. This declaration highlights Amazon’s effort to address rising concerns over transparency related to data centers, which have faced backlash from communities worried about their environmental impacts.
The backlash has been fueled by environmental advocates like Erin Brockovich, who have pointed out that a major complaint regarding data centers is the lack of transparency. Critically, many projects emerge without community input, with developers often bound by NDAs that prevent disclosure until after permits are finalized.
In light of such concerns, various regions, including New York, have introduced moratoriums on new data center projects. Garman warned that such restrictions could hinder the U.S.’s competitive edge in the tech sector and asserted that the country "can’t afford to find ourselves in that position."
Garman also attempted to debunk common myths associated with data centers, including claims about excessive water consumption, rising electricity costs, pollution, and lack of community benefits. He stated that data center water usage represents only 0.5% of industrial water consumption in the U.S., far less than traditional agricultural practices.
While he acknowledged that energy prices have risen in locales with numerous data centers, he argued that these increases are primarily due to aging infrastructure rather than the centers themselves. Conversely, some independent sources attribute significant electrical rate hikes directly to data centers.
Critics have increasingly focused on the environmental consequences of data centers, citing projects like Amazon’s proposed facility in Texas, which could be one of the largest emitters of carbon dioxide in the U.S. Garman contended that these facilities operate at minimal capacity and typically run only for maintenance purposes.
To support community engagement, Garman highlighted that Amazon has contributed over $1 billion to local communities over the past three years relating to its data center projects. However, skepticism remains prevalent among community members, as many express distrust towards the assurances provided by tech corporations regarding their environmental impacts.
