Google has unveiled a series of updates to its AI offerings, these include the introduction of Gemini 1.5 Flash, enhancements to Gemini 1.5 Pro, and the progress on Project Astra, which is its vision for the future of AI assistants.

According to Google, Gemini 1.5 Flash is a new addition to their family of models. It is designed to be faster and more efficient to serve at scale. It is lighter-weight than the 1.5 Pro, yet retains the ability for multimodal reasoning across vast amounts of information and features the breakthrough long context window of one million tokens.

Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, explained, “1.5 Flash excels at summarisation, chat applications, image and video captioning, data extraction from long documents and tables, and more. This is credited to its training by 1.5 Pro through a process called ‘distillation,’ where the most essential knowledge and skills from a larger model are transferred to a smaller, more efficient model.”

Google has made noticeable advancements in its Gemini 1.5 Pro model, amplifying its context window to a revolutionary two million tokens. Refinements are observed in its code generation, logical thinking, multi-turn dialogues, as well as audio and image comprehension abilities.

The tech giant has fused Gemini 1.5 Pro into various Google goods, comprising the Gemini Advanced and Workspace applications. Further, Gemini Nano is now capable of understanding multimodal inputs, evolving beyond solely textual into including images as well.

As for the future plans, Google has unveiled its subsequent open models series, Gemma 2, ingeniously crafted for superior performance and effectiveness. The Gemma lineage also sees newcomer PaliGemma, the company’s inaugural vision-language model, inspired by PaLI-3.

In conclusion, Google has disclosed ongoing developments in Project Astra (advanced viewing and conversing responsive agent), which symbolizes its perception for the upcoming generation of AI assistants. They have created prototype agents capable of information processing at quicker rates, understanding the context at greater depths, and responding rapidly in discussions.

“We’ve always wanted to build a universal agent that will be useful in everyday life. Project Astra, shows multimodal understanding and real-time conversational capabilities,” explained Google CEO Sundar Pichai.

“With technology like this, it’s easy to envision a future where people could have an expert AI assistant by their side, through a phone or glasses.”

Google says that some of these capabilities will be coming to its products later this year. Developers can find all of the Gemini-related announcements they need here.
