In an interview ahead of the Intelligent Automation Conference, Ben Ball, Senior Director of Product Marketing at IBM, shed light on the tech giant’s latest AI endeavours and its groundbreaking new Concert product.

IBM’s current focal point in AI research and development lies in applying it to technology operations. As Ball explained, “As people try to build applications out in the world, it’s an increasingly complex situation. There are so many tools, there are so many environments that go into building and maintaining an application over time that a lot of teams are just drowned under all of the data that’s involved.”

To tackle this challenge, the company has announced IBM Concert, which will harness AI to make sense of the vast amount of data involved in application development and maintenance. “It’s using AI to figure out actually how your application works, and then provides recommendations about how to make it better,” Ball said.

Ball indicates a present opportunity lies in categorizing the structureless data that fuels AI models. He acknowledges a potential disconnect between the unstructured data and what is required in AI – arranged and ready-to-use data. Nonetheless, IBM is committed to closing this gap, with the adaptation and progression of IBM Concert planned to incorporate mechanisms that adjust data into a design that is simpler for AI engines to ingest.

Interpretability is another key feature of AI that IBM is tackling with IBM Concert. Ball stresses the necessity of not blindly following AI recommendations. He remarks, “We’re in fact creating a feature that lets you question the AI’s suggestions, enabling you to delve deeper into how it arrived at that specific conclusion.”

Besides IBM Concert, IBM proffers an array of AI technologies and tools, such as watsonx and AI governance solutions. Ball elaborates that IBM’s goal is to offer a “use-case-neutral” methodology, enabling customers to exploit IBM’s AI capabilities tailored to their distinct needs.

An area where IBM Concert has demonstrated preliminary success is in handling the data avalanche experienced by numerous organizations. Ball reveals that design associates have been “astonished by what we’ve managed to accomplish, the insights we’ve managed to present, even at the most rudimentary level.” IBM anticipates offering even more profound insights and conclusions as IBM Concert’s functionalities continue to advance, ultimately enhancing application performance, security, and overall administration.

When considering the adoption of AI for the first time, the advice from Ball is clear: “Be intentional about your goals with it. Don’t approach with the mindset that just acquiring the technology is the end goal. Instead, have a solid use-case and goal in mind that you want AI to fulfill.”

At the forthcoming Intelligent Automation Conference, a major event IBM is sponsoring, they are set to demonstrate the capabilities of IBM Concert and how it can revolutionize tech operations through AI.

Upon the interview’s conclusion, Ball expressed enthusiasm for the potential of IBM Concert, stating, “We’re highly optimistic about this, and we believe our clients will feel the same way.”
