OpenAI’s Latest AI Model: Facing Diminishing Returns in Performance

During employee testing, Orion reached a performance level equivalent to GPT-4 after just 20% of its training was completed. However, the anticipated transition from GPT-4 to GPT-5 appears to yield less significant improvements than the earlier upgrade from GPT-3 to GPT-4. Some employees noted that while Orion excels at language tasks, it might not perform as well as its predecessor in areas like coding.
Typically, substantial advancements occur in the initial stages of AI training, with subsequent phases producing diminishing returns. This trend suggests that the remaining 80% of training for Orion is unlikely to match the performance leaps seen with earlier models.
OpenAI’s challenge is further complicated by a recent funding round that raised $6.6 billion, which raises investor expectations while facing significant technical hurdles that could hinder traditional AIs’ scaling processes. If the early iterations of Orion do not perform as expected, attracting future investment may become increasingly difficult.
Furthermore, an ongoing issue in the AI landscape is the dwindling availability of high-quality training data. A published research paper indicates that the pool of publicly available human-generated text could be exhausted between 2026 and 2032, which poses a significant obstacle for AI advancements. Developers have largely utilized the existing data that fueled rapid AI progress over recent years.
