Google’s New AI Model Sets a New Standard by Outperforming Top Weather Forecast Systems
Google’s DeepMind team has introduced a new AI model named GenCast, designed specifically for weather prediction. In a recent publication in Nature, researchers detailed their findings, indicating that GenCast surpasses the performance of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts’ ENS, which is recognized as the leading operational forecasting system worldwide.
The DeepMind team explained the advancements of GenCast through a blog post. While their previous weather model made a singular, best estimate of future weather patterns, GenCast utilizes an ensemble of over 50 predictions, each representing different possible weather trajectories. This approach results in a more complex probability distribution of potential weather scenarios.
When the researchers compared GenCast with ENS, they trained the model using weather data collected up until 2018 and then assessed its forecasts for 2019. Impressively, GenCast demonstrated higher accuracy in its predictions an impressive 97.2% of the time.
Google is integrating GenCast into its suite of AI-driven weather models, aiming to embed it into platforms like Google Search and Maps. Additionally, the company plans to offer real-time and historical forecasts generated by GenCast for public use in research and other applications.
